What We Do

At the Chanda Center for Health, we provide person-centered, collaborative care. This means we put the person first. Our approach to health and wellness is collaboration. Delivering this type of care helps us identify each participant’s needs and treat them in the most helpful and meaningful ways.

We understand that our participants health and wellness needs and goals are ever-changing. Therefore, we work directly with each participant to make necessary adjustments and ensure their needs are always being met. As advocates for our participants, we also help them navigate the system and access the resources they need to meet their goals.

Direct Services

The Chanda Center for Health provides access to integrative healthcare at its Lakewood facility as well as at off-site facilities along the front range and across the nation through contracted providers of participants’ choice who meet Chanda Center for Health provider criteria.

Care Coordination

Care coordination is at the heart of our collaborative healthcare model. We work with you and empower you to ensure you are healthy, happy, safe and have the resources and support to live the life you desire.

What to Expect

Internal Navigation

Although many participants seek services at the Chanda Center for Health for specific therapy needs, we want to be certain that all participants engage in a comprehensive in-take process to ensure everything we have to offer has been shared. For example, if someone visits the Chanda Center for Health for massage, we want them to know that acupuncture, chiropractic, counseling and additional services are also available to them. It is critical that participants understand the impact all of our services can offer.

External Navigation

At the time of injury or diagnosis, prioritizing needs and navigation through resources can be overwhelming. In addition to informing participants of the services available at the Chanda Center for Health, our care coordinator helps participants research, contact and access external resources that are meant to enhance independence. Some of these resources include transportation, home modifications, Medicaid services and more.

Chanda Center for Health Behavioral Healthy

Behavioral Health

When our body hurts, so does our mind. The opposite is also true. When our mind hurts, so does our body. The mind and body continually react to each other. Counseling can address the cognitive and emotional concerns resulting from life’s challenges. Some common concerns that many of our participants face include chronic pain, stress, anxiety, trauma, isolation and depression. Through a positive and holistic approach, counseling can help you have more good days. Behavioral Health Services are provided in partnership with Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

What to Expect

Our behavioral health providers will work with you to meet your mental health goals. We currently have two providers, a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed professional counselor. Our providers have experience working with families, couples, and individuals and a large range of specialties including but not limited to anger, anxiety, depression, addiction, pain management, stress and trauma. We also provide bio-feedback! Just like our bodies, we are dedicated to offering the ability for participants to exercise their mind.

Massage

Massage therapy is a system of structured touch, palpation or movement of the soft tissues of the body in order to enhance or restore the general health and well-being of the recipient. Massage uses many different techniques such as effleurage (gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading strokes), percussion, friction, vibration, compression, and passive and active stretching within the normal anatomical range of movement. Such techniques may be applied with or without the aid of lubricants.

At the Chanda Center for Health, our massage therapists include tools as well as yoga, range of motion and stretching techniques that stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase blood circulation and much more. Based on the evidence, massage therapy can provide significant improvement for pain, anxiety and disability related symptoms to improve your quality of life.

What to Expect

Just like our other providers, our massage therapists are also great advocates for your care. As you develop a relationship together, they are a great resource to help you create healthy goals, advocate for changes in your care plan, and provide you with the support you need to make changes to your health both inside and outside of the Center. Each therapist has different practices and backgrounds to fit your individual needs and offer insight to compliment your current wellness practices.

Chanda Center for Health Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the eight branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has a history of more than 2,500 years. Acupuncture involves the use of small, sterile needles (about as thick as a human hair) inserted shallowly into the skin at specific points on the body. Your acupuncture session at the Center may include additional aspects of TCM such as diet and lifestyle counseling, Chinese herbal prescriptions or cupping.

Clinical studies have documented consistent neurologic and endocrine responses to needle stimulation. It has been found that acupuncture regulates the nervous system, aiding the activity of endorphins and immune system cells at specific points throughout the body.

What to Expect

Acute conditions tend to resolve more quickly and chronic conditions need more time. Most people feel some relief from symptoms after the second or third acupuncture treatment. For chronic conditions, it is estimated to take one month of treatments for every year you have had the condition. Please be patient with your body as it works to find health and balance. Your ability to follow any recommended dietary and lifestyle changes will directly impact your response time.

Chiropractic

Modern chiropractic has techniques that allow us to adjust your spine with gentle stimulation using hands and tools. When using this gentle approach, there are not any contraindications in regards to damaging spinal fusions or hardware. All of our chiropractors are well trained in this approach.

What to Expect

A chiropractic adjustment can produce profound results in a short period of time because it stimulates the nervous system. Many participants experience changes lasting from hours to days. In a typical chiropractic setting, an adjustment only requires 7-10 minutes. At the Chanda Center for Health, we allow up to 15-30 minutes per treatment to accommodate transfer and evaluation time to meet your unique physiology.

Physical Therapy

The physical therapist works with participants to create customized therapeutic exercise programs to compliment findings in initial intake. The physical therapist utilizes a variety of techniques including joint mobilizations, fascial and neural mobilization, neuroplasticity graded motor imagery for pain management, trigger point dry needling, cupping and instrument assisted fibrosis management.

What to Expect

While moving your body is important, making sure your body is getting the alignment it deserves is critical. Often the excitement around walking can overshadow the needs of your body, causing more damage than good. It is important to balance optimism for the future and working hard on activities of everyday living. Our physical therapist will work with participants to customized goals, which can range from being able to use a spoon to strengthening your core. With the use of functional electrical stimulation, blood flow restriction, incorporated yoga and other specialized techniques, treatment plans are unique.

Adaptive & Aerial Yoga

It is difficult to find balance without the ability to look inward, whether it is physical balance or balance in our daily lives. Starting the day with a focus on health can be as simple as breathing and stretching. Bringing these two together and you’ve entered the world of yoga.

Adaptive yoga can lead to an enhanced ability to manage stress, a deeper sense of connection with your body and increased strength, balance and flexibility – both mentally and physically. When asking participants, they say “I feel lighter”. Yoga opens space between our joints and relieves the compression we hold in our body due to lack of movement and increased tightness.

What to Expect

In adaptive yoga, classic yoga poses are modified to accommodate the individual. From those who can walk but live with impaired mobility or balance issues, to those with little or no muscle control, all are welcome to participate. Adaptive yoga can also be done in or out of the chair. Props such as chairs placed in front of you to put your legs up, bolsters, blocks, straps, sandbags or even your chair can help with poses. Physical assistance is provided for those who need it.

Dental Care

In collaboration with Visiting Ancillary Services, the Chanda Center for Health provides participants with easy and convenient on-site access to dental hygiene services. Dental services are provided at the Center and there is no need for participants to transfer from their wheelchair or make a separate trip.

What to Expect

Visiting Ancillary Services offers dental exams, x-rays, standard cleanings, and other dental work such as extractions, fillings, etc. These services can happen in your wheelchair or comfortably on an accessible table.

In-Patient Massage & Acupuncture

In partnership with Craig Hospital – a nationally recognized rehabilitation hospital specializing in spinal cord injury and brain injury rehabilitation – the Chanda Center for Health provides recently injured individuals with the opportunity to receive free massage and acupuncture sessions during their hospital stay.

What to Expect

Massage and acupuncture can provide significant improvement for pain, anxiety and disability related conditions to improve your quality of life. All in-patients may receive two massage and two acupuncture treatments provided free of charge with a Chanda Center disability competent provider. Any in-patient at Craig Hospital with interest can speak to their Craig physician. Given this collaboration is a good introduction to services between in-patient and out-patient care, there are options for ongoing private pay or financial assistance both while still in-patient and after discharge.
